HFA148 - Fine Arts Portfolio
Course Description
Create a first-class portfolio or perfect your existing portfolio to prepare for college review committees. Develop new skills as you create drawings from live nude models, still-lifes, and interiors using perspective drawing techniques. All drawing media are encouraged. The instructor will assess your current work to determine what you need to create or improve upon. Please bring one or more samples of the following to the first class: a portrait, a painting, mixed media, art from your imagination, a contour drawing, and various works from observation. Include both color and black and white examples. You may bring your original works or you can bring photographed images to show the professor.Notes
ELIGIBLE GRADES: High School students entering grades 9 through 12 as of the upcoming Fall semester.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES FOR THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS:
- 18 x 24 all-purpose drawing paper pad. (white drawing or sketch paper, 70lbs and up)
- Ebony Pencil or Graphite Pencils (B2/ B4/ B6)
- Charcoal Pencil (medium or soft) Black + White
- Pencil Sharpener
- Erasers: kneaded and plastic and My tip: Mechanical erasers such as “General's Factis Mechanical Eraser” from Blick are very good.
Additional SUPPLY LIST (to be discussed in the first class):
- Additional paper: - two sheets, 18” x 24”, medium gray charcoal paper and two sheets of additional colors, your choice
- Vine charcoal-small box (medium)
- Compressed charcoal- 2 sticks (medium or soft)
- Conte crayons, red / sepia, black, white, soft-B.
- Chamois (for blending and shading) (same as the velvety draying towel for windows)
- Pack of kid’s watercolors (only if you have it at home already)
- Small container of black ink
- Small tube of black acrylic (Inexpensive)
- Small tube of acrylic white (Inexpensive)
- Containers or cups for water
- Something you can use as a pallet (paper or plastic plate etc.)
- Sharpie permanent ink pen, fine point.
- Fixative spray for charcoal drawings (this is important to have. It will fix your drawings)
- Clipboard or foam board with clips: 18 x 24. (to be discussed)
Optional:
- Pastels
- Oil Pastels
- Markers
Optional: If you want to paint, these are color options, but please consult me before:
- Option 1: Paynes Gray, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Titanium White. (My option)
- Option 2: Burned Sienna, Ultramarine Blue (mix this two and you get black), Titanium white
- Option 3 Cadmium Red Medium, Permanent Green, Titanium White
- Option 4: Manganese Violet or Dioxozine Violet, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Titanium White
