HAP032 - Basic Sewing for Designers
Course Description
You'll learn the basics of how to lay out and cut a pattern and sew projects such as a hooded sweatshirt, open cardigan, and/or joggers using an industrial machine, as well as how to make various seams, seam finishes, and hems . Each student will begin with the basic patterns and may customize as time permits. Additional projects can be added as the student advances within the course. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in course.Notes
ELIGIBLE GRADES: High School students entering grades 9 through 12 as of the upcoming Fall semester.

- Scissors- All Purpose- 8-10" (Fiskers, Gingher, Wiss, or Mundial)
- Pinking Shears (optional)
- Thimble to fit middle finger
- Dressmaker pins
- Hand sewing needles (Sharp size 7-9 is best)
- Seam ripper
- Pastel stone dressmaker chalk or fabric marking pencil/pen
- Tape measure (60") (optional)
- Large safety pins
- Large spool of thread (cotton or poly to match student's fabric)
- Notebook & pencil
Note: Fabric will be required for this course, will be discussed on the first day of class
- Yardage of fabric: this is based on size small. Purchase extra fabric for larger sizes. Will handout a swatch example of fabric in class
- Project 1: Top
- 2 yards of 45” wide or 1 3/4 yards of 60” wide fabric, solid or print**
- Thread to match
- Project 2: Shorts
- Shorts: 1 1/2 yards of 45” wide cotton fabric or cotton polyester blend
- 1 yard of decorative or Plain elastic (1 1/2” wide)
- Thread to match
- Project 1: Top
- Note: Purchase cotton or cotton poly blend fabric. Printed fabric with obvious wrong side.
