Course Description
Jewelry crafters looking to develop higher-caliber pieces and students hone basic skills in a studio environment. Learn to use professional tools and techniques, working on basic filing, sawing, and soldering skills. Learn studio safety, maintenance, and cleanliness. Proper design elements and use of metals and stones are taught as well as basic sketching techniques. SXK 101 is held in an FIT Jewelry Design studio room. Some tools available.Notes
Required supplies, please bring to first class:
• 1 Brass bar stock square rod 3/16, 1ft long
• 1 Sterling Silver bar stock square rod 3/16, 6.5 mm-8.5 mm (optional)
• 1 Set of six needles file, cut #2
• 1 1⁄2 round hand file School grade, cut #0
• 3 sheets each wet/dry silicone carbide paper 220,420,600
• 1 Sheet each 3X3, 18 gauge Brass, Copper & Nickel (optional)
• 1 Saw frame, 4 inch
• 2 doz. #0 saw blades
• 1 Set of six drill bits, 1 Center punch
• 1 Asbestos Free Soldering Pad
• 1 Solder pick, solder tweezer, stricker
• 1 Jar Dandix Paste flux (small)
• 1 sheet each easy, medium & hard Solder
• Polishing Kit (wheels only)
• Flex shaft chuck key & Mandrels (2 split, 1 screw)
• Text book, 101 Bench Tips for Jewelers by Alan Revere (optional)
• Square, Ruler, Divider
• Eye protection
